Authentic Local Izakaya · Miyako, Iwate

Experience the Soul of Miyako

Where Local Legends and Travelers Meet.

Fresh Sanriku seafood and the warmth of a community that overcame the waves.

Our Philosophy

A Real Taste of the Sanriku Coast

Tucked into the heart of Miyako's downtown, Sansui is the kind of place locals call their own — a bridge between the sea and the city.

Beyond our celebrated seafood, discover Tohoku treasures like ark shell, sea squirt, and plump local oysters, prepared the way this coast has enjoyed them for generations.

English-speaking staff and an English menu are always available.

Izakaya Diversity

Global Flavors with a Local Heart

Sansui is more than seafood. Hot-sandwich takoyaki, steaming ramen, taco rice, nachos — playful dishes to share over a drink, all made with a hometown touch.

Hikers on the Michinoku Coastal Trail are always warmly welcomed — pull up a seat and taste the Tohoku sea breeze.

The Perfect Pair

Sanriku Seafood & Iwate's Sacred Brews

A sake journey curated by our owner, with local Tohoku labels chosen to lift the sweetness and umami of the day's catch. This is the marriage of authentic Japanese sake and Sanriku seafood.

Trail-worn and thirsty? Ask for the local Michinoku Highball — the hiker's reward after a day on the coast.

The Cultural Experience

The Traditional Tatami Experience

Where locals and travelers connect over drinks like neighbors.

A Room Where Everyone Mingles

Regulars and travelers naturally fall into conversation here, in the warm heart of downtown Miyako.

From a quiet solo dinner to a lively banquet, there's a seat with your name on it.

Raised Tatami Seating (Koagari)

Three raised tatami alcoves, each seating up to four guests in cozy comfort.

Slide back the partitions and the space opens up for groups of ten or more.

Warm wood and soft tatami create the nostalgic hush of an old Japanese izakaya — the real thing.

2nd Floor Tatami Room

Our upstairs room hosts up to 26 guests. We plan every banquet hand-in-hand with the organizer to delight all who gather.

Share your budget and wishes — extra shellfish on the sashimi platter, more rice and fried dishes, a children's menu, and more.

Japanese Tradition, Modern Accessibility

On the tatami floor upstairs, we offer zaisu — floor chairs with back support — alongside our cushions, so everyone can settle in comfortably.

Three zaisu are available, welcoming elderly guests and anyone with back or leg concerns. Just ask our staff — we're glad to help.

The Soul of the Store

A Story of Resilience: More Than Just a Meal

Tsunami height marker preserved at Izakaya Sansui
  1. March 11, 2011

The Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami struck the Sanriku coast. Sansui suffered heavy damage, like so much of Miyako.

  2. Reopening

Carried by the support and encouragement of many, we cleared the mud, rebuilt, and reopened our doors — a small light returning to the neighborhood.

  3. Today

Because this place overcame the waves, we share the importance of disaster preparedness through food and hospitality. We hope every visitor from afar feels the journey of this city.
